  1. Hi Cathy!
I’m currently taking Art for as a GCSE subject and am currently basing my artist research on you, as you are quite a spectacular artist!
I was just wondering if you could help me out a little if you don’t mind? I would be so thankful to you and your help would be greatly appreciated.
If possible, could you answer the following questions?
    -Your birth date and where?
-What inspired you to have a future career in Art?
-Do you use any specific techniques when you are working on a certain piece?
Thank you so much, once again, I would be ever so thankful for your help!! And continue creating your fabulous pieces of art!

    1. Hi Khandija,
Thank you for your comment and kind words. I apologise for the delayed response, I’ve been busy with Open studios and haven’t checked my website for a while.
      In response to your questions.
I was born in 1965 in Middleton, Lancashire.

Art was always something I wanted to do, I love the process of creating something from nothing and seeing a painting appear over the various stages. The death of my father coinciding with my A level Art exams and a personality clash with my A level Art teacher rocked my confidence in my ability. So, like many, I was persuaded to follow a more “practical” career choice. I therefore trained as an occupational therapist qualifying in 1987. After working for the NHS for a while I had my own Private Practice in Paediatrics. I decided to quit my Practice in 2006 for personal reasons.
After some soul searching I realised it was become an Artist or forever regret not trying. There was really no other option. I have not regretted the decision. I experimented with portraits, caricatures and abstracts before settling on the current work direction. I’m inspired by many artists but I’ve never wanted to paint like anyone else so finding a unique style was important and still is.
My work relies heavily on masking techniques. I essentially draw with it and then paint freely on top using watercolour and acrylic inks. I always work from my own photographs and am drawn to distinctive buildings. Repetitive patterns, clean lines and strong geometric shapes draw me in. I’m also fascinated by urban decay and derelict structures.
I hope that is enough information for you, if you need any more information then please feel free to ask.
      Good luck with your GCSEs.
      Regards,
      Cathy Read
