Possibly the smallest of the architectural features in the 4950 Series and a suitable topic for this Valentines Week. I’ll have to Figure out where this one is myself, I know roughly, but can’t remember exactly. I took the photo wome time ago. It is Buckingham centre, that much I can remember.
Why do we obsess about heart shapes?
They are everywhere. especially at this time of the year It’s not even the shape of a real heart, as anyone who’s studied anatomy will inform you. Yet this funny little shape is called a “Heart shape” It’s a relatively simple shape but hard to describe without reference to the term. A triangle with 2 half circles on one side best sums it up? That doesn’t allow for the curved sides which invariable occur, outwards in this case, but if they curved inwards we’d still call it a heart. It can be lopsided or squished, still a heart. Squares, triangles and circles keep the same basic shape whatever form they come in, but hearts exercise liberties with their description. Just take a quick search online and you’ll see my point.
Having arrived at a Heart shape it’s easy leap to see why one would use for ideas of romance, but why this shape in the first pace? Is it the mix of curved and sharp edges symbolising some form of metaphor for love? Who first thought that the heart shape was synonymous with love?
And, while we talk about treaurinng things locked away in our hearts, it’s easy to see why the shape is popular for locks and keyholes, but it’s a curious little shape if you take any time to think about it.
