British Museum
Sometimes I create a painting and forget about it. This is one of those painting. Not because I don’t like it or feel that I did a good job, but because the finished painting isn’t in my possesion very long. This particular one of the British Museum was sold within a week of my finishing it. It is really one of the most delightful problems to have.
I’ve created others of the British Museum, I’m in love with the roof, and so, it seems, are lots of other people. It is a tricky construction to get right freehand.
Three sets of support struts interlock at verying points. The effect is like a swathe of motion, like a skipping rope caught in a strobe light or a propellar spinning. Each leaving echoes of the past movement that cause visual confusion. You can take it all in as a whole or try to follow the spars and get distracted on the way.
Of all my British Museum paintings, this is my favourite. That might change, if I do another one of course. If you’d like to know when I do I send out regular updates.
