44 Fanlight Painting

The Artist's dream.

Any artist will tell you there are always things you are itching to paint. This fanlight painting I created is inspired by a building I’d yearned to transform into a work of art for many years. Once a prominant victim of decay, it’s undergone a recent transformation. Keeping many of the features that attracted my attention, now it looks cared for, a wonderful example of how function and the aesthetic can be combined.

Creating the Fanlight painting flagged up a common problem I have in all my work. How to tackle grey? I don’t have a grey ink and prefer not to mix colours as this takes the vibrancy away. Plus, mixing grey requires the use of white and that tends to be thick an opaque. I could use very thin washes, but that feels too bland. So I went with shades of indigo, and green, blue and black for the shadows.

Too much Choice.

I struggled to decide the subject for the fanlight painting. Partly because I was keen to do this one, but mainly because there is so much choice. I mean, walk around Buckingham and look above the house doors. The variety, even in a small place like Buckingham, is astounding.

Answer: Painting 43 is a house on Main Street in Gawcott opposite the footpath leading up to the Parish Church
