Why is there an exhibition of London painting in the rural Buckinghamshire?

Claydon courtyard is the location for an exhibition of contemporary paintings inspired by London Cathy Read but what’s with the location?
The connection is the Verney family, owners of the Claydon estate which has a historic link with the railway and the Metropolitan line on the London Underground. Sir Harry Verney, 2nd Baronet of Aylesbury and Buckingham railway and invested in its development. At one time, the undergrounds Metropolitan line reached nearby Verney junction, one of two stations named after Sir Harry.

The exhibition showcases London’s streets with a contemporary focus but this isn’t just a visual delight, It’s also an auditory experience with the artist herself guiding you on the tour of her work. The word unique is overused but, if you are looking for a new perspective, it’s here, This journey takes you around London’s iconic architecture and everyday life and into the world of a painting. Familiar scenes re-imagined in a distinctive and dynamic style. Lending an air of contemporary romance to scenes normally grey and dull.

Why take a trip to Marylebone with Cathy Read?

To see the everyday transformed into the magical.

To connect the city with the rural setting of Claydon house and grounds – a stunning location with a growing arts presence. The Verney influence is still there bringing a modern feel to the presentation of the arts. Ancient monuments side by side with cutting edge developments and a smidge of everyday reality thrown in. The paintings themselves are a contrast between rigid structured control and chaotic expressive almost random paint. The elements fusing to create a result which has subtlety and impact.
