At the end of what has proved to be an “interesting” year, I thought I’d share some of my best paintings of 2020. These are my favourites and I’ve divided them into months. Some months I found easy to chose. Many had more than one and one had none at all. That’s not to say I created nothing, just haven’t finished a picture in the month. You wouldn’t be surprised to learn that’s December, would you?
January
The British Library
The reference image for this painting was taken by chance as I was heading to meet a friend at Kings Cross.
It’s an impressive gate and you are in no doubt where you are. I am particularly pleased with how the lettering has come out. The mottled nature of the dark ink area softens what is a very stark image.
February
St Pancras Reflections
2020 has seen something of an obsession with wet streets and reflections.
The looming architecture is still featuring, but is being softened by ripples and puddles.
March
Meeting Place
People have been another obsession in 2020. This is not the first time I’ve included people but these ones have brought in a new perspective on my use of figures in paintings.
April
Kings Cross Reflections
This one features reflections and people, although there’s a feeling of isolation to these folks. They are smaller and much more disconnected than those in Meeting Place. Just shows how the weather affects our moods. Nobody has time to stop and stare, so intent are they on their journeys.
May
Manchester Map
A painting I’d been planning for some time. Ever since I created London Map. The Town Hall is the home of the Bee on the left. The map is from the 1800’s.
June
Leaving Hammersmith Apollo
Another image taken in passing that captured a mood and some rainy reflections. It reminds me of Christmas due to the colours and the lights but it was taken on a damp October evening after a night at a concert.
That's the first six. I'll be sharing the rest on New Year's Eve.
Hopefully we’ll start returning to normal and exhibitions will happen, remember those? I’d love to share my journey in 2021 with you by sending you regular emails featuring my newest paintings and invitations to those exhibitions.
