Debating whether to buy Original Art or a Print?
The decision to buy original art is a big step for many.
It’s easy to feel that getting a print will be a better option for you or that buying a picture is a waste of money. Here are some suggestions that should help you to decide.
-
You love it
I can think of no better reason than you love something. It’s your money and you don’t have to justify how you spend it to anyone!
-
When you look at a piece and every time you see it you think, Wow!
Art can do that, especially big pieces. Even small ones can really make you stop and wonder, while some works are simply ingenious.
-
Friends will wish they’d seen it first
Chances are your friends will love things that you do. Why not entice them to the dark side by taking the first step?
-
Art makes an awesome and unique gift for someone you love.
Choosing a gift can be hard. Original art will be something unique and can have a personal significance. Reflecting a place they love or a hobby or sports pursuit. Many of my paintings have been the ideal solution to a gift crisis.
-
Chose well and art will be an investment
There is no guarantee with this one but good art will always have value. Especially if you buy during the early part of an artists career, the value of the work will improve.
-
Quality: some things are so beautifully made that you can get lost in their wonder:
Once you seen Quality, it is hard to go back and enjoy lesser works. That’s not to say you can’t but something well made offers a whole new level of joy.
-
Nobody else will have one
Original art is just that, original. There may be prints made of the work, but these will never be as good as the original. Things like texture and colour are hard to reproduce, even in these days of excellent digital reproduction, something of the original will be lost. Artist’s Prints are the only exception to this. (Prints made by the artist using lino or screen printing, for example. All the prints will have the same image but some individual characteristics remain, so each print will be slightly different)
-
Art transforms your room.
This will depend on the size of the original art, but even small works can have impact when strategically placed.
-
You want to make a statement that reflects your personality
Whether it’s bold, shocking or a focal point that creates calm. Art you love will be a reflection of you and your interests.
-
Exciting and stimulating conversations can begin with art.
Who is it by? Where is it? How did you find it? All are the beginnings for interesting discussions with family and friends.
-
You will support an artist and enable them to make more art.
We need art because the world would be a much duller place without it. By buying the piece you are supporting artists and enabling them to create more art. I’m often told “I wish I could make something like that”. Whether or not that’s true, support artists you love and enable them to make more creations that impress you.
-
Inspiration.
Art is more than the picture, it’s the mood it creates when you look at it. A thought or memory it inspires. A talking point to challenge your thinking or a way to communicate beyond words.
The source of joy, of sadness and so much more

Sometimes you should buy original art just because:
It’s a Tuesday and you’re celebrating or you want to remember; for whatever reason you’ll see something in a painting that will resonate. You don’t know why but does it matter?
There are many other reasons to buy original art, each one of them personal.
Please feel free to add more to my list!
All you need to do now is find the art but that’s a whole new post topic. The first step is to look at Art. I can help you get started with that, take a look at my work for sale, there’s no obligation to buy.
