30 Street Light
There are a number of street lamps of this style in Buckingham. This one attracted my attention set against a backdrop of twisted beech branches. They merge together, these organic and man made shapes, fused in an abstract form. I made no attempt to create depth in the background, the branches are one continuous sprawl. White lines suggest branches but the colours wander where they please. There’s no structure in the paint, it flows , separates into colours, here pink, there ochre and everywhere a mix of bark brown and grey blue sky. The lamp appears to float in the branches. The lone geometric shape in an arboreal landscape. It’s unlit, the light on the glass coming from daylight, not internal illumination.
The dark frame of the lamp contrasts with the glass sides. The rigid darkness broken by a raised squiggle of black ink which emphasises the dark colouring underneath.
