About the Image

Discovering the Thames Path

The Thames path is worth a walk. This view of Canary Wharf hides the scale of the river. We’re past the last Bridge, Tower Bridge, on the way out to sea.

This is the tidal river, where the ships would have come in to the heart of the Docklands. We’re in Rotherhithe on the south bank, at a point where there’s only foot traffic, bikes and boats, on the Thames of course. Other points don’t offer such a good view of the river, as the path weaves in and out of on and off the bankside. To pass all the private land that sides onto the river.

It’s something I miss about the canal. On the canal, you can hop off at any time to walk along the towpath. Not so on the river. We travelled the Thames ring in our boat, many years ago, the Thames was by far the most challenging. The views were impressive, but there are so few places where you can moor and hop off compared to the canal, and we never came this far. These are tidal waters, and you need a radio and special lights, neither of which we had on our little craft and we’d had enough. Also a narrow boat on tidal waters required a particular nerve unless it’s fitted out with the conditions for the conditions, but I digress.

This is the painting I wish I’d created on a grander scale, the towers almost vanish due to the degree of masking used and are in stark contrast to the lamp post on the near side. I feel a larger scale would have added to the grandeur of the image. I may revisit the scene at some point.

Creation: Masking fluid is painted onto watercolour paper to create an image. This is covered with a watercolour wash and covered with clingfilm. The picture is further developed using acrylic inks once the film is removed. The masking is removed after several layers are added and allowed to dry. Revealing the final picture.
