About the Image

Beaconsfield Church, like most medieval churches, dominates the town. It’s a fine example of the flint and stone construction often seen in the region. I was drawn to the porch and the graves which show signs of their age. The small one seems particularly poignant.

The initial drawing for the Beaconsfield Church Painting, was created in situ and it was later finished off in the studio. It was done as a move to practice painting in a limited time frame but took much longer than I allowed.

The picture is painted on watercolour paper, beginning with a detailed pencil drawing. The lines are then drawn over with masking fluid before painting it with a watercolour wash which gets covered with clingfilm. Once this is removed, the picture is further developed using acrylic inks which are left to dry before the masking is removed to reveal the final picture.
