32 Gate Bell – Print

There’s a rainbow of colour in this little picture of a bell, on a wall, framed with an iron mechanism that permits the visitors to alert those inside the estate.

Red specks near the chain; large yellow blooms on the coping stones; pink flashes in the sky; greens of foliage competing for space; purple highlights; orange brown stonework; and blue iridescent highlights that catch the light as you move. Each colour sets its own tone and space.

The bell has greenish silver scribbles to show where light reflects. The bell is weathered but still rings clearly when the chain is pulled.

The image appears clear from a distance but closer inspection shows little definition in the lines of the colours. Yet the overall combined effect gives the painting a semi realistic effect. The eye, or rather the mind, fills in the details, which could easily be missed if it wasn’t for the human mind’s incredible capacity to see patterns. We want, no NEED, to see patterns in what we see. Even when none are there. In this case though, the illusion is intentional. Bringing focus on the details to help guide the illusion. The links of the chain, the curve of the bell’s dome, the shape of the cradle mechanism and the edges of the wall and tree. Everything else is up to you.
