Warwick Mill – Original Painting

About the Image:

Towering over Middleton, Warwick Mill is a fine example of a northern Mill. Manchester has lost so many of it’s mills, a reminder of the days when Manchester was the heart of a thriving cotton industry. It may no longer earn the name of Cottonopolis, but the roots are clear and can be found in the architecture that remains.

Warwick Mill dominates my hometown. It’s a magnificent building, sadly very neglected and in need of some serious restoration. This painting  looks up at the mill from the street and it’s alive with tendrils of ink escaping to the sky.

Creation: Masking fluid is painted onto watercolour paper to create an image. This is covered with a watercolour wash and covered with clingfilm. The picture is further developed using acrylic inks once the film is removed. The masking is removed after several layers are added and allowed to dry. Revealing the final picture.
