About the Image

The Town Hall captures your eye, emerging from coloured clouds, its well defined lines form a solid impression, with a hint of the spiritual. The smoky colours intermingle with wisps of foliage from the cloud of trees below. Amazing how our cities are always much greener than we imagined. Half hidden behind this foliage, the town hall is a solid presence.  A clear clockface records the time with elegant black hands. Pinks and red merge with the more prosaic ochres and brown colours.

Below the trees, a line of cars waits at the lights off to the right, slowly making their way around the city. You rarely move quickly in a city. The lone cyclist seems to mock the scene, heading in the opposite direction unhampered free and moving at a faster rate, taunting their lack of motion.  Other figures can be discerned behind the cars. Some clearly, but most are the meerest lines. Outlines of ghostly pedestrians. At first glance, the scene appears to be devoid of people. The lone cyclist, an isolated human. Except for those in the cars I mean, but people in cars tend to vanish, dark outlines in dark windows.

What is the spirit of Manchester. Is it these invisible people? Could they represent the 1000s of souls who have lived in the city, in its long history. Representing the minds that dreamt of the town hall, the hands and bodies who created the vision out of stone, glass and metal. Or maybe it’s the building itself, brought about by the hands of men and women of the city, and somehow imbued with their essence.

The spirit of Manchester is ever present.

How was the original Spirit of Manchester painting created?
An initial pencil drawing onto watercolour paper was created. These lines were then drawn over using masking fluid. Next, they were painted using watercolour paint and acrylic ink. Several layers of paint were built up. Salt was also used in the process and some of the ink blown around using a straw. Once the painting was dry the masking fluid was removed to reveal the finished painting.
