49 Gate Latch

When I first came across these long handled latches I was puzzled. Not being a rider, I hadn’t appreciated that there might be an issue. Then again, I tend to avoid bridleways as I prefer narrow footpaths. This latch is quite new and shiny still, or is it?

It appears to be broken. Why else would the gate be tied closed with rope? It’s tied loosly so can be opened. Just a loop connected at one side with the other hooked over the gatepost. The twist of the open fibres defined. As you follow the rope around, there’s a frayed knot by the fence pot.

A tree in the field is fenced off with green netting. Beyond is the lake reflecting brownish green from the land beyond and probably life in the water.

The top of the fence and gate weathered black with highlights in sky blue, iridescent ink.

There’s not much to see of the latch. A long pole stands upright with a suggestion of mechanism and some bolts that attach it to the gate. How does it work? You’ll have to visit it to find out. Look for it at Bell gate in Stowe Landscape Gardens,
